The Secret of the Effortless Golf Swing

If you are interested in taking personal golf instruction based on the information you've read so far, the following article will give you a good idea of what to expect.

Golf instruction is a subject not to be taken lightly.

Golf is a sport of relaxation and self improvement that can be made terribly complicated in the wrong hands. If you play golf and wish to improve, golf instruction may be your best bet.
A word of warning: Be choosy when you decide who will teach you this game of golf.

The first rule of golf instruction is good communication,

Many golfer's lives are made difficult due to poor communication between teacher and student. If you are looking for an answer to a certain part of your golf game and the instructor doesn't understand what you are looking for, the resulting frustration can leave you with a bad opinion of golf instructors and golf instruction in general.

For example: Many years ago in my golfing career I had a swing flaw I could not figure out.(prior to my education to teach golf) I went to quite a few instructors over a period of two years, but the answer was usually the same... It all looked good but my head was ahead of the golf ball at impact. Now I know the answer in an instant, but I keep that memory so that I can remember how difficult it might be for a beginning golfer. The sixth instructor I went to had the answer to my dilemma but I wouldn't have gone to him had I not won the lessons in a putting contest.(I had a bad opinion of golf instructors) That's the instructor I stayed with.
Often times a student leaves a lesson without a clear understanding of the content of a lesson. Unfortunately, if the student doesn't ask enough questions until they do understand, they are left with the problem of either scrapping the lesson or trying to figure it out. Most golfers, since they paid for the golf instruction, try to figure it out. That can lead to more complicated problems and the need for more lessons.

I have seen instructors go out to the lesson tee, watch a student hit balls for five minutes, make a correction and watch the student work on the correction, and leave when they thought the student made the correction. It sounds good at first. Golfers should not try to incorporate too many changes to their swing at one time. Every change can lead to other problems. The problem comes when the lesson is over and the pro leaves. The student is concentrating on one part of his swing but may not know why the change was made or what the end result of that change will be.

Too much emphasis on a single part of the golf swing often leads to a breakdown of the rest of the swing.

Every lesson should have a well defined goal.

When I give a lesson, it starts with a discussion concerning the golfer's game, what they feel is wrong, shot patterns, thoughts during a round, and most of all, what the golfer hopes to accomplish through the lesson.
Depending on what part of the game we decide to work on, I watch the golfer hit the shot(s) that bothers him(her). Before I make any suggestions, we talk about what I see that needs work and how the correction will affect his game. I talk about the correction and explain the expected result of the correction and ways to make sure it is working.

I want the golfer to understand what the intended result is before they go back to hitting golf balls. The golfer will then hit balls and we will work on ways to make sure he(she) understands what is being changed, how, and why. I also give the golfer routines to perform without a club to reinforce the change.
The last step is to show the golfer how to insert the golf swing change into their preshot routine so that they don't end up thinking about it on the course.

Not every teacher will go to these extremes, but your teacher should be concerned enough to discuss the lesson with you so that you understand what is happening.

Another thing that bothers me with golf instruction is the teacher who teaches a certain type of swing.(many times similar to his own) Each person has their own individual swing based on their physique and personality.

Trying to fit a person with a swing that isn't meant for their physique is a crime.

A good instructor knows how an efficient swing works and what makes a swing efficient. That teacher will apply those principles to an individual's swing to make it work better. If your taking lessons, ask your teacher questions about how the swing works in principle. If you don't feel your getting a sufficient answer, maybe it's time to find a golf instructor that understands the golf swing and will listen to find out what you wish to gain from his or her instruction.

A good golf instructor should be able to help you get your game in order in a few lessons.

After that, the lessons should deal with specific parts of your golf game (not just the golf swing). When you find a good teacher, pay attention and ask questions, that is the way a good teacher knows what your thinking and can guide you in the right direction.
